A Smart Phone World: Northeastern Blizzard of Dec. 2010
How many of us have been stuck somewhere we would rather not be at the worst of times? I can personally tell you it is not a fun situation. This week’s snow blizzard in the North East crippled cities, along with airports and the transportation we all have become accustomed to. Many were stuck in Airports over night even days as flights were cancelled. Imagine having to lie on the hard airport floor, bored to death not knowing when you might be able to make it back home. Imagine having to watch the same cnn broadcast over and over again while hearing all the complaints various people are talking about. This is where a smart phone comes in handy, now the hectic world is closed off while the world you want becomes reality. Almost all airports have a free charging station so why not put that smart phone to usage in a major way. The beautiful thing about a smart phone is that it sometimes provides a get away from the norm. It’s not a laptop but with all the applications around we are able to treat it like one. For example, many people found out about their cancelled flights by using their smart phones. News does not hide from the customer on the web. Word of mouth travels in such a rapid pace that we tend to receive all of our news on our smart phones before any other outlet. Looking for a hotel near the location you are stranded in? As the new saying goes, there’s an app for that! The beauty of a smart phone is that if you can conceive it, there is probably an application for that. Now there is no excuse to keep up with the news, find a much better alternative to the airport floor and sometimes horrendous food. On a day like the one the blizzard created there were two groups of people. There were the ones bored to death not knowing what to do to kill time. Then there was the group that embraced their smart phones and decided to put it to heavy use. This group was still uncomfortable with their unfortunate situation, but now had the power to do something about it. They were not confined to just the airport, now they had the world at their fingertips. Bills were still paid, work got done, sports were still watched, conversations continued worldwide with the help of a charging station of course. Now instead of hours of twiddling your fingers, you were now able to spend those hours doing things that could free your mind from this ordeal and even become productive. Now you would be able to watch the TV channels of your choosing, search for the news you want and not to mention you get to block all the commotion around you. What is there not to like about smart phones? If only they could transport us to our desired location, now that’s an application to dream about!
Handy iPod tips: iPods and PCs
Here is a dilemma, there are two iPods in the family and just one PC. What do you do? It’s easy enough to synchronize both iPods with just one computer, as long as both iPod users are happy accessing the same music library or the same set of playlists. But that can get hard to manage, especially if you’re manually updating the iPod or adding new music that you’d like to keep separate.
In most cases, the easiest way to keep discrete libraries for syncing both iPods is to create a separate user account for each person who uses an iPod with the computer. The Insider Secrets video shows the steps for doing this using Mac OS X; here’s how to create a separate user and share music under Windows XP.
First, click Start > Control Panel > User Accounts (Start > Settings > Control Panel if you use the Classic view). Click “Create a new account,” and follow the instructions.
Windows XP kindly provides a shared folder that already includes a directory called Shared Music (find it under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents). The easiest thing to do is to copy all the music on your computer into this folder so that all users can access it. Then the lucky owner of the new iPod can pick and choose what music to include in his or her iTunes Library. From the new account, in iTunes, click File > Add Folder To Library, and copy over whatever music you want (make sure to check the box next to “Copy files to iTunes music folder” when adding to library, under Advanced in the Preferences dialog box, so that iTunes doesn’t consolidate the files for the music library).
Now both users can share all or part of the same library, add new music whenever necessary, and automatically update their iPods without the hassle of manually sifting through a large shared library.

I’ve sold many headsets to both very satisfied and unsatisfied customers. I am going to share with you my knowledge and hopefully help you choose the right one.
*Very important: some people have been sold fake Motorola headsets, I don’t know how widespread this is.. But read the sellers feedback first. A seller selling fake headsets will have received negatives as such. A price too good to be true.. may be just that.*
The major factors (as with most things you buy) are price, functions, style..
#1 Price.. its all a matter of your budget and needs.. if you use the headset very rarely, a regular model will do the job.. most low priced headsets from reputed manufacturers will do the job..
#2 Functions, this includes headset talk time / standby and quality.. Depending on where and how you intend to use the headset, you may opt for a longer talk time.. this is very important for those that may not have access to their wall or car charger. Lower priced models have about 4 hours talk time and higher priced up to 10 hours of talk time.
Most bluetooth manufacturers have some type of quality technology. Motorola has CrystalTalk, Jabra has Wind / noise reduction, Logitech has WindStop… The key is figuring out what you need and recognizing the technology.
Also, many headsets have 30 foot+ range, depending on your work / home and the like.. this may be a important factor to you.
Note: Most headsets include just a home wall charger, a car charger usually needs to be purchased separately.
#3 Style, this isn’t so much at what color the headset is, rather I have found that many are outright upset at the headsets weight / fit / feel etc..
Its hard to say exactly what weight is best, but i’d say to keep it under 15 grams.. definitely for all day wear.
Some headsets have no hook, rather a in the ear gel that some may find more comfortable, another factor is how the headset buttons are, what buttons / options are on the headset. LED light indicator to let others know that you are or aren’t talking.
You may also be interested in a over the head headphones like headset.. I sold a model by Logitech (mobile pro) and they seemed to be satisfied.
There are behind the the neck headsets, earplug headsets and many other styles and varieties.
As a word of experience, do your research and make what you think is the best choice. Something too heavy may hurt your ear if they are sensitive, but it may not offer the battery life you need… but if you need that much battery time.. make sure your ear can handle the headset design.
